Treacherous yet beautiful; relentless and restorative. The rampant churning of the Southern Ocean seems tempered by the tender glow of the setting sun. The wind swept, wave lashed shores of Van Diemen's Land, were a beacon of heartbreak or hope for weary shiploads of convicts and crew, whose hardy descendants helped shaped the character of a nation.
Such a high benchmark was set with Claudia and Jeremy as leaders, hotels, the ship and the shore visits that it will be a very hard act to follow. Believe me all my expectations and more were met.

Strewn between Victoria and Tasmania, the Furneaux archipelago is a group of more than 50 islands, many of which are accessible primarily by boat. Because of the rough waters, they are largely unexplored by everyday travellers – but we are not everyday travellers. On a Private Jet we are whisked from Sydney to Flinders Island.
We explore the island and discover its untamed beauty before reboarding for our onward flight to Hobart. Awaiting us for the next three nights is the Henry Jones Art Hotel – located right on the waterfront and close to Salamanca Place.
A small and charmingly diverse city, Hobart is full of treasures. You might choose to explore them independently today, or join us on a journey to nearby Bruny Island, where a choice of adventure presents itself.
Enjoy a tour of Australia’s southernmost capital after a morning stroll amid the stalls of the colourful Salamanca Market.
A visit to Hobart would not be complete without wandering through the incredible Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). With exhibitions that push the boundaries and change perceptions of art, you will certainly have something to discuss over a sublime lunch at The Source restaurant.
We return to the city via the Derwent River aboard MONA’s stylish ferry, with cameras at the ready to cruise under the Tasman Bridge.
Set in the shadows of Cradle Mountain, Lake St Clair is our goal this morning. Here we look out to panoramic views of Cynthia Bay as lunch is served at Lake St Clair Lodge, before we travel via the remote copper mining town of Queenstown to Strahan, where the delightful Strahan Village greets us for a two night stay.
A visit to ‘The Wall in the Wilderness’, an incredible 100 metre tall sculpture by artist Greg Duncan, is certainly a highlight of today. And it’s still a work in progress.
The Gordon River is a waterway of tranquil beauty, one that's seemingly untouched by modern life. In Premium Upper Deck seating aboard the Lady Jane Franklin II, we cruise to Heritage Landing, venturing into a secret world in which Mother Nature has crafted some of her most inspired works.
After lunching on board, we return to Strahan, where a matinee production of ‘The Ship That Never Was’ is bound to provide a chuckle. By the water at Risby Cove Restaurant this evening, locally caught fish is one of many items on the menu that will be hard to ignore.
After skirting through the mountain scenery by road, we arrive at Wynyard Airport where our Private Jet is waiting. Upon take off we peer out the jet's windows to watch the lush green of Tasmania disappear from view. Soon though, we're making our descent from the clouds to land on verdant King Island. We check in to our clifftop retreat, Boomerang By the Sea, then we'll go in search of the gourmet cheese and prime beef that has made the island famous.
We visit the King Island Dairy for an obligatory tasting before heading north to the Southern Hemisphere’s tallest lighthouse at Cape Wickham.
Today we depart King Island and fly to Mount Gambier and the Coonawarra wine region. Here, we unravel the secrets of Cabernet Sauvignon and delight in lunch and tastings hosted by Head Winemaker of Katnook Estate, Wayne Stehbens.
A lake that lies in the crater of a volcano and changes colour with the seasons may sound like something from a fairytale. But today we see the spectacular Blue Lake, along with the intriguing Umpherston Sinkhole, with our own eyes.
Spend the morning wandering through the town centre and exploring the antique shops and galleries. Then, it’s back on board our Private Jet for a lunchtime flight to Kangaroo Island, where we enjoy two wonderful nights at the lavish Southern Ocean Lodge. After a delicious picnic lunch, we visit the Seal Bay Conservation Centre and get up close to dozens of seals on the beach.
This evening, we enjoy the first of several fantastic dining experiences at Southern Ocean Lodge. We toast the emerging wine region of Kangaroo Island over divine cuisine. Designed in harmony with nature and gathered from the island, this is truly sustainable and delicious food.
Kangaroo Island is home to Flinders Chase National Park – where we find the Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch and, with any luck, a local colony of fur seals. After we spend the morning exploring the park and its wildlife, we return to the lodge for a very special lunch.
Having sampled our fill of local delicacies, there’s time to relax this afternoon and enjoy the lodge. Perhaps you’ll reserve a visit to Southern Spa (additional cost) or enjoy a walk along the beautiful coastline. We reconvene for pre dinner drinks in the Great Room, followed by another wonderful four course dinner.
From kangaroos to oranges, we fly from the Southern Ocean to Mildura this morning and view the junction of the Murray and Darling rivers before checking in to The Grand Hotel.
We celebrate another local hero tonight as we dine at the legendary Stefano’s restaurant. The award winning cuisine provides a fitting finale to your culinary exploration of the Southern Islands.
Today we travel to Trentham Estate winery aboard a charming paddle steamer and watch the Murray River unwind. After one final indulgence over lunch and tastings, we board our Private Jet for the flight to Sydney. We say goodbye to our new found friends, refreshed and looking forward to the next adventure.
Imagine a trip where you won’t have to lift a finger, or worry about bringing your wallet.
