Full Itinerary

Depart Australia

Day 1: Saturday 5 August

Prepare for that frisson of excitement this evening as we take to the skies with Emirates, bound for Denmark via Dubai. Soon, we’ll be laying chase to the land of the midnight sun along the shores of the far north.

Arrive Copenhagen (Denmark)

Day 2: Sunday 6 August

Arriving in Copenhagen on a summer’s afternoon, let’s hope this sleek and supremely chic Danish capital is basking in life al fresco. We check into our hotel, D’Angleterre, a grand dame of Copenhagen society, with its generous dash of heritage and panache. Later we relax over a superb dinner of cutting edge cuisine.

Day 3: Monday 7 August

Our fairytale theme takes us to the turreted idyll of Rosenborg Castle and its dazzling Royal Treasury. There is time to stretch our legs around the enchanting Tivoli Gardens whose theme park is home to the world’s oldest roller coaster. Don’t worry, there is no obligation to take a ride! Tonight’s Welcome Dinner rounds off a regal day.

Kangerlussuaq – Ilulissat (Greenland)

Day 4: Tuesday 8 August

After an early breakfast, we fly to what may feel like the ends of the earth, touching down in Kangerlussuaq, gateway to Greenland. An onward flight then takes us straight on to the ‘town of icebergs’, Ilulissat. Once known as Jackobhaven, this port town is flanked by the UNESCO listed fjord in Disko Bay, the sea mouth repository for one of the world’s most productive glaciers. On arrival, we are welcomed into the warm embrace of the Arctic Hotel.

Disko Bay, Greenland

Disko Bay - Ilulissat Icefjord

Day 5: Wednesday 9 August

Your eyes are not deceiving you today, as you board a tuk tuk and tour Ilulissat’s centre, visiting the Zion Church and native polar explorer Knud Rasmussen’s birthplace. Enjoy a guided walk to meet working Greenlandic dogs – not your average lap dogs! After developing your taste for Greenland’s flavours at Hvide Falk Restaurant over dinner tonight, the best is saved for last as we board a midnight cruise amid Ilulissat Icefjord’s chiselled peaks. With the midnight sun’s molten glow invigorating the soul, we listen for the eerie echoes of ice as it shifts and cracks in the surreal Greenlandic landscape.

Day 6: Thursday 10 August

Tuck into a hearty breakfast, before choosing one of the two thrilling polar adventures on offer today!

  • Sail to Eqi Sermia Glacier to see the cerulean icewall, before joining a helicopter flight to see the enormity of the nation’s icecap. Alternatively seek out the ripples of whales beneath the chilly depths of Disko Bay from aboard our Targa boat.

Later we admire the tenacity and traditions of the Inuit during a dinner and cultural evening, before returning to our hotel.

Day 7: Friday 11 August

With time to absorb the views once more this morning from the luxury of our hotel, why not relax into the glacial pace of the region’s ice floes that surround you? For after lunch it’s time to take to the skies on a brief flight to Nuuk, Greenland’s capital city. Nuuk means ‘heart’ and this evening we head straight for the city centre to the Hotel Hans Egede.

Reykjavik (Iceland) Join Silver Wind

Day 8: Saturday 12 August

Sail 6.00pm

We’re bound for the ‘Land of Ice and Snow’ on our morning flight today, but nothing quite prepares us for Iceland’s mist skeined canvas of ice capped volcanoes and glaciers. When in Iceland, we will do as the Icelanders do on the way to Reykjavik. We take the plunge into the alabaster waters of the Blue Lagoon – the country’s most famous mineral rich geothermal spa. This evening, we’re welcomed aboard our ship, Silver Wind, and the luxury is immediately apparent.

Day 9: Sunday 13 August

Arrive 8.00am – Sail 6.00pm

Hugging Iceland’s roughhewn shores we appreciate our ship’s ability to reach locations less travelled. Soon, we go ashore on our chosen adventure.

  • Visit Dynjandi waterfall on the remote Westefjordes peninsula, and perhaps take an easy hike to the waterfall’s top tier. Or you may prefer to explore remote Vigur Bird Island where eider ducks, puffins, Arctic terns and other birds of a feather can be found in their thousands.

Day 10: Monday 14 August

Arrive 8.00am

This close to the Arctic Circle, the sun takes only a quick overnight catnap, so daybreak is a step ahead of us early this morning. Whispers of myth and legend lure us ashore today to Akureyri in Iceland’s northeasterly Diamond Circle. It’s your choice as to which excursion you’ll embark on.

  • Arrive on the lava sculpted shores of Lake Myvatn, and set out for the raging torrents of Dettifoss, Europe’s mightiest falls, before the Tolkienesque Asbyrgi canyon bewitches us once more. Or, feel the powerful pull of gravity at Selfoss, see Godafoss and admire Aldeyjarfoss amid its ancient lavafields during a tour of Iceland’s seven greatest waterfalls.

Akureyri – Husavik

Day 11: Tuesday 15 August

Sail 6.00am – Arrive 12.00pm – Sail 7.00pm

Blustery breezes buoy our anticipation as we set sail for the seaport of Husavik. Our tour here reveals that Husavik and its coastline harbour mouth watering culinary traditions. On a boat trip to Hrisey Island, we experience the gastronomic know how of brewers and fishermen, and savour a taste of North Iceland.

Day at sea

Day 12: Wednesday 16 August

A day at sea offers the chance to make the most of the ship’s facilities, attend a lecture or just relax, cocooned in the discreet sophistication of Silver Wind.

Torshavn [Faroe Islands](Denmark)

Day 13: Thursday 17 August

Arrive 8.00am – Sail 4.00pm

This morning we’re on course for the Faroe Islands, marooned between Iceland and Norway and part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Docking in the town of Torshavn, our Select options offer you a fine choice of exploration.

  • Tour Kirkjubour to see the ruins of St Magnus Cathedral and Torshavn’s National Museum of the Faroe Islands. Or take a boat trip to see the looming sea stacks and sheer cliffs of Streymoy, clamouring with legions of birds such as gannets, fulmars, kittiwakes and puffins.

Lerwick [Shetland Islands] (United Kingdom)

Day 14: Friday 18 August

Arrive 9.00am – Sail 11.00pm

Lerwick, the ‘mainland’ capital of the Shetland Islands, is today’s gateway to discovery!

  • Perhaps pay a visit to the puffins of Sumburgh Head Lighthouse. Along the way, travel past St Ninian’s Isle and dig into the history of a 4,000 year old archaeological site, before a pub lunch and a tour of the Shetland Museum and Archives in Lerwick. Alternatively, you might choose to drop in on a Shetland knitwear designer to try on island knits for size and meet some endearingly pint sized Shetland ponies!

Kirkwall [Orkney Islands]

Day 15: Saturday 19 August

Arrive 9.00am – Sail 6.00pm

It’s all ashore in Orkney’s capital of Kirkwall today. We’re off to explore the isles’ Neolithic heart, heading first for the Stone Age settlement of Skara Brae, before contemplating the Ring of Brodgar, where we roam freely amid its ancient stone circle. After sampling some typical Orcadian fare, taste the aromatic notes of fine single malts at the Highland Park Distillery. For our final stop we visit the Italian Chapel, built by Italian prisoners of war confined to the islands during World War II.

Glamis Castle

Day 16: Sunday 20 August

Arrive 8.00am – Sail 10.00pm

The choice is yours today in Dundee.

  • Turn out for a full day at Glamis Castle, the setting for Shakespeare’s Macbeth. See the remains of Arbroath Abbey, taste a traditional Arbroath Smokie and take a tour of the RRS Discovery. Or enjoy a day in St Andrew’s, exploring the British Golf Museum and the white sand beaches of Chariots of Fire fame, before stepping back in time through the imposing ruins of St Andrew’s Cathedral and Castle.

Day 17: Monday 21 August

Arrive 8.00am

We alight in Edinburgh at its most effervescent with the world’s largest arts festival in full swing. See the Scottish capital in a day, starting in Leith aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia for a tour of the Queen’s former floating holiday retreat. A city tour then takes in the Royal Mile, the National Gallery, the Museum of Scotland and Edinburgh Castle, which vies for our attention atop its lofty Castle Rock. We dine on the Royal Mile tonight, before enjoying an evening of Scottish pomp and ceremony from the best seats in the house at the iconic Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Day 18: Tuesday 22 August

Sail 2.00pm

We take to the cobbled wynds and closes of this grand Gothic city to explore once more. The Palace of Holyroodhouse opens its doors to us this morning before we peek into the world of Scottish politics with a tour of Scottish Parliament’s Debating Chamber. This afternoon, our ship cuts across the Firth of Forth bound for the North Sea.

Day 19: Wednesday 23 August

Arrive 10.00pm

It’s our last day out on the ocean and time to reflect in the wake of all we’ve discovered. Tonight brings the unique privilege of gliding up the famous River Thames. Watch in awe as the bright lights of the British capital draw closer, before our ship drifts beneath the London Tower Bridge.

Day 20: Thursday 24 August

What a sight awaits as day breaks over the London Town. Replete, we bid our ship farewell, downsizing vessels for a cruise up the Thames to the Savoy Hotel, etched on London’s who’s who of accommodation for over a century. Here, delight in the fine British tradition of tea and sandwiches before time at leisure this afternoon.

  • Indulge in a dine-around evening in the city’s bustling West End Theatre District.

Afterwards, a West End show caps off what has been a truly remarkable journey.

Depart London

Day 21: Friday 25 August

After breakfast we transfer to the airport for our afternoon flight home via Dubai.

Arrive Australia

Day 22: Saturday 26 August
