Australia to Canada

Day 1: Tuesday 28 August

We depart Australia for the unbelievably crisp air of British Columbia. On arrival, we are met at the airport and driven to the Fairmont Empress Hotel set on Victoria’s picturesque Inner Harbour. After an afternoon spent at our leisure, we are treated to a private viewing of Emily Carr House. Emily Carr was an iconic Canadian artist and writer, known for her depictions of First Nations people, as the indigenous are called here. After, we sit down to a welcome dinner in the House, which was her childhood home and a perfectly preserved heritage building.

Victoria (Canada)

Day 2: Wednesday 29 August

Victoria is one of the oldest cities in the Pacific Northwest, and was named for the reigning queen of England. Founded as a Hudson’s Bay Company trading post in 1843, the town grew exponentially in 1858 when the Fraser River gold rush increased the population from 500 to 5,000. This morning we take a city tour. Our first stop is the majestic public buildings of Government Street. From there, we continue to Chinatown, the oldest in all of Canada. We take in views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the rugged Olympic mountains beyond on scenic Marine Drive.

There are 70 urban parks in Victoria alone, earning it the title of ‘City of Gardens’. This afternoon, we indulge in an extravagant high tea at the famed Butchart Gardens. Afterwards, stroll through its dazzling displays of flowers and reflect upon the virtuoso efforts of its landscape artists.

Clayoquot Sound

Day 3: Thursday 30 August

A chartered sea plane is the only way to access the exclusive and remote Clayoquot Wilderness Retreat, our home for the next three days. We stay in luxury tents surrounded by soaring evergreens between which peek snow-capped mountains. While our tents are supremely well-appointed, with plush beds, warming stoves and oriental rugs, we can expect to spend most of our time outside.

If it is bears you have come to see, you will almost certainly spot many. Clayoquot Sound is prime black bear territory, and one of our retreat’s main adventures is wildlife viewing. We can choose from a plethora of other activities, including everything from whale watching and fishing to hiking, surfing and kayaking. Another signature experience at Clayoquot is horseback riding. Whether you are a novice or an expert, there is no better way to explore the tranquil forest, and maybe spot a bald eagle, than from atop a horse.

Clayoquot Sound

Day 4: Friday 31 August

The crisp morning air greets us again. If you can’t get enough of bears, then head out once more with our retreat’s guides. We board our boats and observe the bears as they amble along beaches foraging for food. These trips promise to allow you extraordinarily close encounters with the majestic creatures while maintaining a safe distance.

The Pacific coast is also home to numerous sea mammals. In the waters around us live three types of orcas, Pacific white-sided dolphins, porpoises and minkes while migrating humpback whales, grey whales and fin whales treat our part of the world as a marine highway. While we are at Clayoquot, you must take advantage of the rare chance to see so many of these animals in one place.

Whistler

Day 6: Sunday 2 September

Spend your final morning in Clayoquot as you please. Squeeze in one last activity or simply soak in the peaceful atmosphere within the retreat. Later this afternoon, our chartered float plane flies us to Whistler. En route, we stop for a private picnic lunch on the shores of a lake or along the coastline. On arrival, we check in to the luxurious Four Seasons Resort, our home for the next two nights.

Whistler is set in a valley gifted with stunning views. Flanked by mountains with year-round snow and dotted with glacier lakes of an unimaginable green, it is a town that celebrates the great outdoors. While it is best known as a winter ski resort, summer allows us to explore other, rarely seen aspects of the region.

Whistler

Day 7: Monday 3 September

Explore wild Whistler with one of these two Your World experiences.

  • A backcountry tour on a Polaris RZR, a high performance ATV. One of the best and most thrilling ways to see Whistler from ground level. Witness amazing wildlife as our expert guide skilfully weaves through old growth forests and around mountain lakes.
  • A morning gondola ride including the Guinness World Record-breaking Peak 2 Peak. The experience delivers a 360-degree view which encompasses mountains, glaciers and forests.

The excitement continues with a helicopter flight over Whistler’s breathtaking landscapes before landing at a remote mountain lake for a private gourmet lunch. We work lunch off with a short, scenery-filled hike before boarding the helicopter again to return to Whistler.

Vancouver

Day 10: Thursday 6 September

Wake up late and enjoy a leisurely breakfast this morning. After check out, we drive to Kelowna for an early afternoon flight to Vancouver. Explore at your own pace, or follow a guide. We visit historic Gastown, Vancouver’s original downtown area. Dating to 1867, the district once played host to a rowdy crowd of loggers and fishermen on the off-season. Today, the area has been cleaned up and its historic buildings are home to independent shops, restaurants and tech companies. The tour also takes in Chinatown, Canada Place, the waterfront and Stanley Park, a densely forested reserve surrounded by Vancouver Harbour and English Bay.

The night concludes with a farewell dinner at Seasons in the Park restaurant. Situated at the highest point in the city, its views are secondary only to its cuisine. We drive to the airport after dinner to board our flight home.
