Tour Highlights

The clusters of spinifex and eucalypts remain as still as the surrounding rock. In the distance, an ancient watercourse bakes beneath the cloudless sky. Shadows fall across banded domes that have been weathered by wind and water over millions of years. From above, the grandeur is accentuated; a state of humility comes easily.

Kimberley Cruising with Silversea Expeditions

Bungle Bungle Range

Bungle Bungles

Such a high benchmark was set with Claudia and Jeremy as leaders, hotels, the ship and the shore visits that it will be a very hard act to follow. Believe me all my expectations and more were met.

Where we visit

This is an expedition cruise, no two cruises are identical. The exact itinerary and wildlife encounters cannot be guaranteed but rest assured, your Expedition Leader and Captain will work together to ensure opportunities for adventure and exploration are the best possible, taking into account the prevailing weather, tides and wildlife activity. Expedition Team members scheduled for this voyage are subject to change or cancellation. Many of the shore excursions will involve a medium level of activity. A reasonable level of fitness is required to undertake the onshore activities.

The Kimberley

Days 3-7: Thursday 27 April - Monday 1 May

Prepare to be amazed and inspired as we cruise the Kimberley coast aboard the region’s most luxurious expedition ship. This place is wild, beautiful and totally unspoilt.

The Kimberley has the second largest tidal range in the world so we need to be flexible, ready to change our plans at the last minute and embrace the unexpected. It is in these moments that the real magic is made.

Here are some of the places we may visit:

Nares Point & Crocodile Creek

Nares Point is a long finger of sandstone protruding from the mainland alongside Koolan Island. With its photogenic rock formations, this is a superb location for Zodiac exploration and beach walks with our naturalist guides. In nearby Crocodile Creek – free of crocodiles despite its name – take a refreshing swim in the natural pool.

Talbot Bay (Horizontal Falls), Buccaneer Archipelago

British naturalist David Attenborough described Horizontal Falls as ‘one of the greatest natural wonders of the world’ – and he should know! This group of over 800 islands was created millions of years ago by erosive tidal changes and the region’s 150 metre tides.

Depending on whether the tides are ebbing or flowing, we will board our Zodiacs for an exhilarating ride through the falls. Then continue deeper into the sandstone gorge of Cyclone Creek and discover amazing geological formations created over the last two billion years.

Montgomery Reef

You have to see Montgomery Reef to believe it. Our Captain will certainly have his job cut out for him if we go there. Timing the tides is essential. Here, the sea rapidly recedes almost without warning, tuning this subterranean marine world upside down and exposing four metres of reef to the world. Aboard our Zodiacs we will make our way to the edge of the reef, where water cascades down to expose the fascinating reef. A visit to Montgomery Reef is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Raft Point

At the opening of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, the world saw an enormous Wandjina spirit rising out of the ground. It was, for many people, their first encounter with Aboriginal mythology. The image was actually that of a 35 metre sculpture created by an artist who lives at Raft Point. We use our Zodiacs to access Raft Point, where we disembark and hike through the landscapes of the Kimberley. The unique boab trees make for interesting photographs! Reaching the top of Raft Point your efforts will be rewarded with magnificent views of the bay.

Hunter River

The Hunter River is home to an immense mangrove system that dates back over two billion years. Will you see the image of the Indian Head in the soaring red sandstone cliffs on our Zodiac excursion? Exploring the narrow mangrove channels we will hope to see a flurry of bird species and if we’re lucky maybe even come across a saltwater crocodile, the most aggressive crocodile known to man.

Want to explore further inland? Hop aboard a helicopter flight to the famous Mitchell Falls, where four tiers of waterfalls plunge into deep pools that flow out into the Mitchell River (additional expense).

King George River & Falls

It’s an enticing welcome to one of the Kimberley’s most magnificent natural wonders, as a sea of emerald green or deep blue leads us aboard Zodiacs up the King George River to the King George Falls.

At 80 metres high the twin cascades are among the highest waterfalls in Australia. As our Zodiacs manoeuvre us as close to the falls as possible, the power of nature is simply humbling.

The falls might be astounding but that doesn’t mean we ignore the river itself. Aboard our Zodiacs we will weave through an expanse of near vertical red rock formations and a parade of wildlife – carnivorous saltwater crocodiles plus amazing birdlife including giant raptors and the brahminy kite.

Bungle Bungle Range

Day 8: Tuesday 2 May

Wyndham is our gateway to the breathtaking Bungle Bungle Range in Purnululu National Park, a UNESCO listed site — and with good reason. For more than 350 million years nature has shaped geological formations of giant orange and black striped domes.

Known to local Aboriginal people for thousands of years, the Bungle Bungle Range was only discovered by the western world in the mid 1980s. From the ground it’s amazing, from the air it’s something else altogether. We take to the skies on an included flight over the Bungle Bungle Range as well as Lake Argyle and the area around the Argyle Diamond Mine.

Day At Sea

Day 9: Wednesday 3 May

A leisurely day at sea gives you time to reflect on the amazing sights you have seen. Soak up the unique Silversea Expedition vibe – the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. This afternoon join your Expedition Team in the Lecture Room for a talk on the Dreamtime or wildlife of the Kimberley.

Jaco Island (East Timor)

Day 10: Thursday 4 May

Forming part of East Timor’s first national park, Jaco is an uninhabited island that’s known for its array of birdlife. Silver Discoverer will make a short technical stop here and, weather and time permitting, we hope to explore independently before plotting our course back to Australia.

Day At Sea

Day 11: Friday 5 May

We awake to a final day to relax on board and embrace the luxuries available to us.

Regardless of which path we took over the last ten days, there will no doubt be plenty of adventurous tales to tell!

Darwin (Australia)

Day 12: Saturday 6 May

We arrive in Darwin this morning. Savour a final breakfast before disembarking and transferring to the airport.

  •  If you wish to spend additional time in Darwin and the surrounds of Kakadu and Litchfield national parks we can organise an inspirational journey at your request (additional expense).
