We were all spoilt from day one and all made to feel that Captain's Choice were continually focused on our well being and on our enjoyment.
Col Bradford - Ancient & Holy Lands, 2016
Where toy houses balance on sun-filled fjords and the sky melts into the sea. We fly this evening with Emirates seeking purity and peace in Europe’s north.
We arrive into Copenhagen on a summer’s afternoon. A private transfer delivers us to Hotel d’Angleterre. An alabaster neoclassical palace on the famous Stroeget shopping street, there are no finer establishments in this fastidiously well-ordered capital. We cherish two nights here.
Danish chef Andreas Bagh’s Michelin-starred gastronomy delights our palates this evening on a memorable Welcome Dinner. Modern Nordic cuisine dazzles brighter than the enduring evening light.
Legacies of the world’s oldest monarchy punctuate Copenhagen’s graceful streets. We discover numerous castles, palaces and royal monuments on a tour this morning. Visit Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid statue and stroll around Tivoli Gardens. Copenhagen’s oldest theme park, opened in 1843, is as charming as ever.
After lunch, we call on Kronborg Castle. Take the scenic route through Helsingor and the Danish Riviera, and pause to admire the Queen’s Summer Residence at Fredensborg.
The briny history of the Vikings comes to life at Roskilde. We explore the ancient Viking capital and its ruins. Discover what drove the Danes and their Scandinavian brethren over the seas to pillage and plunder.
We board Silver Spirit later in the day. Watch Copenhagen dissolve into the distance, Champagne in hand.
The day is yours to relax on board. In summer, these waters are rich in plankton. Look for minke, humpback and sperm whales in deep sea feeding grounds. Fulmars, gannets and cormorants drift on the breeze above our ship.
On Norwegian soil, fjord country awaits.
A slow rail journey into the clouds unfolds aboard the Flamsbana. One of the world’s steepest train lines takes us through wonderfully beautiful scenery. From impressive peaks at ocean level near the Sognefjord in Flam, we lurch to the summit at Myrdal mountain station on Hardangervidda plateau. Dare to look down at the ocean 863 metres below.
We meet our ship in Gudvangen in time for afternoon tea.
Pastel-hued buildings wedged between mountains and fjords. We arrive at the art nouveau city of Alesund. Examine the Art Nouveau Centre and the Art Museum KUBE with a
glass of Champagne in hand. After, a Your World experience in on offer.
Discover islands once the centre of power during the Viking Age. On Giske, Godoy and Vigra islands we follow the footsteps of earls, kings and Viking chiefs.
Norway’s former capital, Trondheim, sits pretty on the brink of a fjord. Our ship stays here in port until late evening. Design your day with two Your World experiences available to you.
A gentle day at sea as we edge north. Relax and admire your reflection in the fjords with a flute of bubbles. Take advantage of the impeccable amenities aboard Silver Spirit.
Mossy hills merge to mountains dusted in snow further along Norway’s coast. Far above the Arctic Circle, today we reach the constellation of islands in the Norwegian Sea known
as the Lofoten Islands. An outpost of untamed wilderness, the beauty is astounding.
The air is brisk in Svolvaer, but the chill invigorates your soul afresh. Old fishermen’s cabins in red and white adorn the peaceful harbour. We experience a warm Lofoten Island welcome with lunch in a reconstructed longhouse. Our hearty meal is accompanied by singing Vikings.
This afternoon we meet the mountain goats at Aalan Gard Farm. With our heads in the clouds, we learn how goat cheese is produced using traditional methods.
As Tromso slides into view we have officially entered the Arctic Circle. We admire the Arctic Cathedral and visit the Polaria. The world’s most northerly aquarium houses a
Noah’s Arc of Arctic marine species.
After lunch we experience a bird’s-eye view of Tromso. Aboard a cable car, we glide to the summit of a nearby mountain for impressive views.
The edge of mainland Europe is in sight. Yet the Gulf Stream brings winters milder than those towards the southern end of the country. Through rugged landscapes we travel to the North Cape. It’s a thrill to stand upon Europe’s northernmost point. Caviar and Champagne complete the experience.
At this time of year, it never quite grows dark. Our days feel languid and endless. We stay in port until late evening and enjoy exploring Honningsvag at leisure.
Our ship nudges into port today in Hammerfest. A clutch of handsome wooden houses greet us at the harbour. The northernmost town in Norway, and perhaps even the world, is at our doorstep until after lunch.
Roam the town on your own schedule, watching for reindeer who have right of way here. Or choose from two Your World experiences. Each reveals intricacies of this secluded region.
To Norway’s fourth-largest island today. Hinnoya is defined by lush forests and snow-capped peaks. Glassy fjord waters ripple like silk. Wild strawberry fields add a sweetness to the air.
We land at the town of Harstad during the annual Arts Festival of Northern Norway. Enjoy the musical and cultural festivities at your own pace. Or, take part in a Your World experience. The choice is yours.
Norway’s true beauty reveals even more of itself on our return journey south along the coast. Relax on board during a leisurely day at sea.
The Viking port of Hellesylt leads us to the nation’s most famous fjords. At Geirangerfjord, sheer granite cliffs shimmer with seven plunging waterfalls, known as the ‘Seven Sisters’. A full-day tour by road immerses us in breathtaking scenery. Farms rest on steep cliff sides along the twisting mountain road to the village of Geiranger.
Take a deep breath, the air in Bergen is as pure as it comes. Hedged in by hills and fjords, we immediately fall for this pretty waterside town. Admire charming timber houses and peruse curious museums. Later, take a ride on the Bergen Express over mountains and beside mirror-like waters. Afterwards, relax and enjoy the scenery on your own terms. Our Your World experience, however, is not to be missed.
We bid farewell to Norway and sail off toward Danish waters. A day at sea gives us a chance to enjoy the onboard facilities. You may attend a lecture or take some time out at the spa.
Back to where it all began. A second inspection of Copenhagen takes us to Hillerod. Here, we seek out the Renaissance castle and Baroque gardens of Frederiksborg Castle on a private visit. An afternoon is well spent at the castle’s Museum of Natural History. We leave as learned experts in Danish history.
A relaxing day at sea merges into a pleasant evening, wining and dining under the glow of the midnight sun.
The green domes of Helsinki Cathedral flicker into view as breakfast is served. We step out to enjoy the harbourside city on our own. Or spend the day on a Your World experience.
From the Peter and Paul Fortress to St Isaac’s Cathedral, today’s city tour introduces us to St Petersburg’s magical sights.
This evening we are treated to a private ballet performance. Dress for the occasion, we are headed for one of the city’s most famous buildings.
Our second day in St Petersburg unfolds as we please. Explore on your own or choose a Your World experience.
Pavlovsk Palace was constructed in 1781 in honour of Catherine the Great’s son. We explore the palace and park. Catherine Palace is our next stop. A stroll around the manicured gardens precedes lunch and a Russian folklore performance.
The bright lights of St Petersburg twinkle out of sight as we set sail this evening.
Castle turrets and regal domes adorn the skyline. Tallinn appears straight out of a fairytale. We discover the pretty Estonian capital on our own terms. Or, today’s Your World experiences shed light on a city that retains an air of secrecy.
Disembark Silver Spirit in Stockholm. Our home on land for the next two nights is the Radisson Blu Strand Hotel. Delving deeply, enjoy panoramas of the city on a river cruise to Fjallgatan, before exploring the Royal Palace and the Old City.
Dinner takes place at the Operakallaren, home of the Royal Swedish Opera. Water views enhance our stunning meal.
On a long, light-filled day in Stockholm you’re free to wander and explore however you wish. The city’s effortless style is apparent at every turn. Or perhaps you’ll fancy our Your World activities?
Stockholm’s City Hall is arguably the city’s most famous building, home of the esteemed Nobel Prize awards. It also plays host to our Farewell Dinner this evening. Celebrate our journey over a Swedish banquet, paired with live music and performances. It’s a treat to imagine all those influential laureates who have also dined in this very room beneath the same 18-million gold leaf tiles.
Awaking in the star luxury hotel of Stockholm, it’s time for a tough decision - how to spend our free morning. To stay in and lap up a little more of that lavish Scandinavian-style living, or head out and about?
If you choose to wander amid its genetically blessed residents, you won’t have to venture far. We’re just minutes from numerous museums and the gorgeous yellow and amber buildings in the Old Town. Swedish coffee in one hand, a cinnamon bun in the other, the city is yours to enjoy.
We transfer to the airport to meet our Emirates flight home.
We arrive home as worldly wanderers this evening. We hope to see you again on your next Captain’s Choice adventure.
