Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Cairns – Cooktown

Join your Private Plane from Cairns this morning and fly up the coast to historic Cooktown. On arrival we will visit James Cook Museum then travel on to Nature’s Powerhouse in Cooktown’s historic Botanic Gardens for lunch, a gallery tour and some free time to enjoy the gardens. We will then visit Grassy Hill Lookout and the main street where we stop at the numerous historical remains, including the statue of Captain Cook, who spent seven weeks here in 1770 after The Endeavour was damaged on the reef. Enjoy a Welcome Reception and Dinner and get to know our crew and fellow travellers.

Day 2
Cooktown – Horn Island/Thursday Island

This morning we fly to Horn Island where we take a World War II tour, revealing the vital role the Torres Strait played in Australia’s northern defence. Horn Island was a strategic air base and we will visit the old trenches, taxiways and gun sites. Later we join a ferry to Thursday Island, a remote Torres Strait outpost. We visit the Gab Titui Cultural Centre, preserving the cultural heritage of the Torres Strait. There will also be time to explore the town and take a tour around the island including the Torres Strait Museum and Green Hill Fort. Accommodation for our time in the Torres Strait will be relatively basic.

Day 3
Cape York

Enjoy a relaxing boat trip across Torres Strait to mainland Australia at Seisia. On arrival we join 4WD vehicles for the bumpy journey to the beach landing where we commence a walk on sand and rock to the tip of Cape York. Our tour continues with a picnic lunch at the beach and a visit to the ‘Croc Tent’.

Day 4
Horn Island – Normanton – Winton

We fly across the Gulf and Cape York Peninsula to Normanton, a major town in the Gulf region. We transfer from the airport to the town aboard the Gulflander, a historic rail motor along a rickety track. Later we rejoin our Private Plane and fly south to Winton where we enjoy a tour of The Australian Age of Dinosaurs and a barbecue dinner under the stars. Overnight at Boulder Opal Motel.

Day 5
Winton – Longreach

This morning we visit the Waltzing Matilda Centre where the history of this famous song is celebrated. We enjoy a leisurely lunch at the Centre before flying on to historic Longreach, famous as one of the birthplaces of Qantas and location of the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame. We stay for two nights at the four star Albert Park Motor Inn. This evening we take a cruise on the Thomson River and enjoy dinner on the riverbank with live entertainment, a blazing campfire and a sky carpeted with stars.

Day 6
Longreach

Today we explore Longreach including a visit to the Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre, where we receive a fascinating insight into outback life.

After lunch, join the optional 747 Wing Walk (additional cost) or Boeing 707 Restoration Tour.

Late this afternoon we go back in time to the ‘Dawn of Aviation’ and its pioneer beginnings at the Qantas Founders Outback Museum, where we enjoy a comprehensive tour and special dinner surrounded by historic Qantas aircraft.

Day 7
Longreach – Birdsville – Flinders Ranges

We depart aboard our Private Plane this morning to reach the original ‘back of beyond‘, Birdsville. Visit the Wirrarri Visitor Information Centre, Birdsville Bakery and John Murray Art Gallery. Enjoy a tour of Birdsville including the racetrack, the Australian Inland Mission Hospital and other aspects of this frontier town before an outback lunch in the beer garden of the famous Birdsville Hotel.

We then fly south over Lake Eyre, usually a vast saltpan but in recent years a spectacular inland sea. Early this afternoon we arrive in Port Augusta and drive to the magnificent Flinders Ranges for a two night stay. The beautifully rugged scenery envelops us as we drive approximately two hours through the Pichi Richi Ranges to Wilpena Pound Resort.

Day 8
Flinders Ranges

Today we take an incredible half day trip through some of the most breathtaking scenery in Australia. Explore more than 100 million years of history as well as marvelling at the rugged beauty of Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges.

This afternoon is free to relax and enjoy this magnificent locale; or take one of the scenic bushwalks from the resort.

Day 9
Flinders Ranges – Broken Hill

We rejoin our Dash 8 in Port Augusta for a short flight to Australia’s largest inland city, Broken Hill. For 100 years the mineral wealth of Broken Hill ensured a booming community and the city’s history is reflected in Broken Hill’s magnificent buildings. Broken Hill has been and still is a town dominated by the mining industry. On arrival we will take a tour of the Royal Flying Doctor Base before visiting the Day Dream Mine, established in 1882, where you can walk into the mine and learn of its history.

This evening we enjoy a Farewell Dinner and stay overnight at Broken Hill’s best hotel, The Royal Exchange.

Day 10
Broken Hill – Orange – Sydney

This morning we will take a town tour and visit the Miner’s Memorial on the Line of Lode and the Pro Hart Gallery before transferring to the airport. We head east to Orange, a garden city on the slopes of Mt Canobolas. We enjoy a delightful lunch overlooking the vines at the Highland Heritage Vineyard before rejoining our aircraft for the final part of our journey to Sydney.

WE ARRIVE IN SYDNEY WITH TIME TO CONNECT WITH FLIGHTS TO MOST OTHER CITIES. PLEASE ENQUIRE FOR DETAILS.
